Wiki vs. Google-docs: Which to Choose?

Well, I had the same problem again that is part of the reason why I haven't entered anything for awhile. This time I asked Walt to problem solve for me. After a few minutes the problem fixed itself. Of course I waited too long to post and had the same problem, but obviously it again changed to allow me to post. The good news is that I can blog, the not so good news is I probably didn't do anything last time to make it work and I still don't know what to do if it reoccurs. Oh, the frustrations of a beginning blogger.

I came across a question in Doug Johnson's blog asking what is the difference between Google-docs and a wiki. It made me feel good that even he was struggling with this. I have had conversations with Dawn and Kimberly about this because they prefer a Wiki and I prefer Google-docs. I think that it may be partly due to the fact that it is for each of us the first thing we tried. Based on the number of changes posted to their recent wiki, they win hands down as I have not seen the same success with my principal Google-docs site. I wonder if they think by ignoring it my latest new fad will just disappear. I just might surprise them soon though.

Anyway, I liked reading the comments to his posted questions. It made me change some of my thinking about these tools. I wonder what it would feel like to get that many comments. Boy that was wishful thinking.

Enough for now, have a great day.

Actually, I don't prefer one tool over the other. In fact, a teacher just called me to talk about her wiki and in the course of the conversation I recommended she try a Google-doc instead. But your raise an important observation about jumping on board with whatever is new. This is the thinking I've been doing about wikis and Google-docs followed by how this issue relates to the bigger issue of letting the "wow factor" of any particular tool guide our decision making.

Both wikis and Google-docs are tools that allow for collaborative authorship. In fact, I see a Google-doc as a type of wiki--a wiki with a specific purpose, namely that of drafting and producing a written document which most likely will later be printed or shared in the same a way a Word document would. A wiki essentially works the same way (edit and save) but has a different end purpose. I see a wiki as a place to collabortively collect and refine and share information that people need to have access to in the future. For me, a wiki would likely never get printed out--it lives and evolves on the web.

We use a wiki for the 10Tech project because we need one place to collect, store, etc. information that several people need access to AND that information changes over time. I use Google-docs when I want to collaboratively author a written document. For instance, we used a Google-doc to write the initial drafts of the laptop pilot letter that went home to Endeavor students and parents. The letter was from Terry and the three Endeavor teachers--they all needed access to the letter and needed to be able to give their input. In the end it got printed out and sent off.

So, which to choose? Whichever one best meets your goals. Seems obvious, but this is a challange. It's so easy to become enamored (I know, it's happened to me) with the newest cool thing, but I'm really trying to stay mindful of thinking about a thing's usefulness and only using it when it make the best sense. Sometimes a pencil will make the most sense. Sometimes a Google-doc, sometimes a wiki, sometimes a blog, and, of course, sometimes a podcast, sometimes a _________ (insert cool useful digital tool that hasn't even been developed yet, but will be in a matter of weeks or months).

For each new tool I "discover" I think about two things: 1) What can this tool allow me to do that is worthwhile that I couldn't do before? 2) Can this tool allow me to do something I already do in a better way? These questions help me stay grounded whilst in the throes of some very exponential learning and discovering.

It seems that for many of the tools there can be quite a bit of overlap in how they are used.

I'm finding that it is helpful for me to see new tools in action - embedded in our everyday work. I was reminded about that today as I participated in a Doodle survey Kimberly sent out to determine a meeting time out of 7 possible dates that worked for everyone to finalize the date of the 1:1 parent meeting. I saw all the current responses and added my own without multiple e-mails going back and forth and trying to keeping track of responses. I just clicked on the link in the e-mail and I was participating with a new tool.

I'm wondering what we will find are the most effective ways to support our staff in learning about these new tools and to consider the many different ways they might use them with their students to impact learning.

A wiki basically works in the same way, but it’s not supposed to be different that He can eat and endless. Even in the place where one does not gather to share their knowledge Wikipedia page editors, and the metal wiki I see myself the following, and have access in the future. For me, a wiki is probably never printed - it evolves, and it lives on the web.
